How IndieGala Freebies Work

IndieGala gives away small indie games on its Freebies page at freebies.indiegala.com. To claim one, sign in with a free IndieGala account, open the game's page, click Add to Library, and download the game from your IndieGala library. Most freebies are DRM-free downloads rather than Steam keys, so you keep the files and can play without a launcher. Here is each step, plus how to install the game and fix the usual problems.

What IndieGala freebies are

IndieGala is a PC game store best known for game bundles. On a separate Freebies page it also lists games that their developers give away, mostly short indie titles. There is no weekly schedule like Epic's: new freebies appear at any time, and some are only free for a limited period, so claim the ones you want when you see them.

  • Where: the Freebies page, freebies.indiegala.com. Our daily posts link to each new freebie, and our Free PC Games Right Now page lists the current ones.
  • What you need: a free IndieGala account.
  • What you get: usually a DRM-free download that stays in your IndieGala library.
  • What it costs: nothing. A freebie never asks for payment details.

How to claim an IndieGala freebie

  1. Go to indiegala.com and sign in, or create a free account with your email address. If IndieGala sends a confirmation email, click the link in it first.
  2. Open the freebie's page, from the Freebies page or from the link in our post.
  3. Scroll down to the claim area near the bottom of the page, just above the comments.
  4. Click Add to Library. If a captcha appears, complete it.
  5. Open your library from the account menu at the top of the site and check that the game is there.

Downloading and installing the game

You can download straight from your library in the browser. IndieGala also has a desktop app, the IndieGala Client, which can download and install your games for you, but you don't need it to claim or play a freebie.

  1. Open your IndieGala library while signed in and find the game.
  2. Pick the download for your system (Windows, and Mac or Linux when the developer offers them).
  3. Save the file somewhere easy to find, such as your Downloads folder.
  4. If the file is a ZIP, right-click it in Windows and choose Extract All, then open the new folder.
  5. Run the installer, or the game's .exe file if there is no installer.
  6. Keep the downloaded file in a backup folder or drive. Because it is DRM-free, you can reinstall from it later without downloading again.

If Windows warns you about the file

Small indie games are often not signed with a certificate, so Windows SmartScreen may say "Windows protected your PC". If the file came from your own IndieGala library and your antivirus scan finds nothing, click More info and then Run anyway. Never do this for a game file you got from anywhere else.

What DRM-free means for you

DRM is software that checks whether you own a game before it runs. A DRM-free game has no such check: it runs offline, needs no launcher running in the background, and the installer you downloaded keeps working on any PC you own. Not every freebie is DRM-free, and a few come as keys for another store, so read the game's page to see what you get.

If something goes wrong

  • The Add to Library button is missing: you are not signed in, or the freebie has ended. Sign in and reload the page.
  • The button does nothing: pause ad blockers and script blockers for the site, reload, or try another browser.
  • The game isn't in your library: wait a minute and reload, then sign out and back in.
  • A checkout or a price appears: stop. You opened a paid game or a bundle, not the freebie.
  • You can't sign in: use the password reset on the sign-in page. An account with its own email and password is the easiest to recover, so set one even if you signed up through a social login.

IndieGala and Epic: two ways to collect

Epic gives away bigger games, but on a fixed weekly schedule and only inside the Epic Games Launcher. IndieGala freebies are smaller, appear at any time, and are often files you keep yourself. Many players collect from both. See How to Claim Free Games on the Epic Games Store for Epic's steps.

FAQ

Do I need to pay or enter a card?

No. Freebies are added to your library without any payment details.

Do IndieGala freebies give Steam keys?

Usually not. Most are DRM-free downloads from your IndieGala library. The game's page says when a key for another store is included.

Do I have to install the IndieGala Client?

No. You can download freebies in your browser. The client is optional and handy if you claim a lot of games.

Do I keep the game after the freebie ends?

Yes. Once it is in your library it stays there. Keeping a backup of the download is still a good idea.
